Continental, mid 19th century. Oil on canvas housed in a period Italianate openwork gilt frame. An Old Master copy of Raphael's depiction of Saint Cecilia, showing her at center, flanked by Saint Paul and Saint John on the left and Mary Magdalene and Saint Augustine on the right, unsigned but Costa and Conti label on reverse of frame; 54.25 x 34.25 in. (sight).
Raphael's depiction of Saint Cecilia is noteworthy because it was a very early representation of Saint Cecilia as patron Saint of Poets, Musicians, and Music, and by some accounts, the first. Raphael's original work was placed in the Church of San Giovanni in Monte, Bologna, as an altar piece. In May of 2012, Raphael's Saint Cecilia was loaned to an exhibition titled Late Raphael hosted by both the Louvre in Paris and the Prado in Madrid.
Costa and Conti were a prominent Florentine duo who ran an art gallery specializing in copies of Renaissance masterpieces executed by academically trained artists. Costa and Conti themselves were skilled artists. The gallery was praised by many early tourist guides and the work in the inventory was often exhibited at major European art institutions. This particular painting won a Medal of Distinction at an early Florence, Italy, Art Exposition, as indicated by a label affixed to the verso, testifying to the overall quality of the work and its faithfulness to Raphael's original work.
