Engraving, plate impression 8.375 x 10.5 in., 10 x 13.25 in. overall., numbered 302 at lower left and with 12 lines of description in German and four in French. Produced by Hogenberg, a German family of printers.
A rare illustrated news broadside, amazingly issued within only a week or two following the event.
Nineteen-year-old Jean Chatel gained entry to the King's chamber on December 27, 1594, and attempted to stab the king, but barely grazed his lip. He was immediately apprehended and two days later, according to law, had the hand with which he attempted to strike the king burned off with molten sulfur and lead, and was then executed by being drawn and quartered, as illustrated in the upper left panel.
