Connecticut Queen Anne Bonnet-Top High Chest
American (New England, probably Connecticut), 18th century. A Queen Anne bonnet-top high chest in maple with pine secondary, the upper case having a broken-arch pediment and a turned finial above a central pinwheel-carved drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, over four thumb-molded graduated long drawers, the lower case with mid molding above one thumb-molded long drawer and a row of three aligned drawers, the middle drawer embellished with fan carving, all above shaped aprons and sides and rising on cabriole legs ending in pad on disc feet; ht. 80.5, wd. 37, dp. 19.75 in.
The back of the pinwheel-carved drawer inscribed This was the property of Col. Benjamin Hanks, about 1750. / It came from the homestead on Hank's Hill, Conn. / Bought by Maria E. Lincoln Bill. / Written by / Alma Lester Bill Bullock / on / Sept. 30th 1925. The inscription also includes the Hanks' family tree. Benj. Hanks / Fanny Hanks Freeman / Tarsus Freeman / Fanny Freeman Parker / Elizabeth Parker Lincoln / Maria Lincoln Bill / Alma Bill Bullock / H. Regnold [sic] Bullock, Richard G. Bullock.
Refinished. Legs replaced. Scratch to front of third drawer from the bottom of the upper case. Some age splits and veneer repairs. Front right foot with a glue repair. Brasses with a few small losses and one repaired.
