- Lot Description
Connecticut Queen Anne Bonnet-Top High Chest
American (New England, probably Connecticut), 18th century. A Queen Anne bonnet-top high chest in maple with pine secondary, the upper case having a broken-arch pediment and a turned finial above a central pinwheel-carved drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, over four thumb-molded graduated long drawers, the lower case with mid molding above one thumb-molded long drawer and a row of three aligned drawers, the middle drawer embellished with fan carving, all above shaped aprons and sides and rising on cabriole legs ending in pad on disc feet; ht. 80.5, wd. 37, dp. 19.75 in.
The back of the pinwheel-carved drawer inscribed This was the property of Col. Benjamin Hanks, about 1750. / It came from the homestead on Hank's Hill, Conn. / Bought by Maria E. Lincoln Bill. / Written by / Alma Lester Bill Bullock / on / Sept. 30th 1925. The inscription also includes the Hanks' family tree. Benj. Refinished. Legs replaced. Scratch to front of third drawer from the bottom of the upper case. Some age splits and veneer repairs. Front right foot with a glue repair. Brasses with a few small losses and one repaired.
