Collection of 50+ documents, letters, and photographs identified to slave owner Andrew Aldridge of Charles Town, West Virginia. According to his obituary reprinted in the May 10, 1894 issue of the Baltimore Sun, Aldridge was born in Montgomery County, Maryland in January of 1818, and moved to Charles Town, West Virginia in 1847, where he purchased a farm and resided for the remainder of his life. He was remembered as an "active, influential businessman" who was "connected with several public enterprises" in his community. He died in 1894 after what was called a "short illness with nervous prostration," and is buried in Zion Episcopal Churchyard in Charles Town with his wife, Margaret Irene Green Aldridge. The obituary states that he left behind a widow, one son, and three daughters. One of his daughters listed in the obituary is Estelle Aldridge, who appears to be featured in some of the photographs in this collection.
Highlights of the collection include slave tax receipts (one dated 1866 mentions, "Free Negroes"); an 1849 Leonard Sadler coffin receipt for making two coffins (Sadler purportedly made John Brown's coffin); 2 war-date Union army passes; an Internal Revenue document collecting tax during the war; numerous pew rental receipts from the Presbyterian Church; a rare war-date letter mentioning Colonel Turner Ashby's cavalry; and two rare Union Army permit documents, which we have never encountered.
