Jones, A.A. ALS, 3pp, "Atlanta, Ga." March 12, 186[3?]. Addressed to his wife and daughter concerning his visit to the Spiller and Burr factory in Atlanta.
Spiller and Burr was a Confederate gun manufacturer created by two loyal secessionists, David J. Burr and Edward N. Spiller. The company opened at the beginning of the Civil War, but labor shortages among other issues stunted its production levels and overall success. They initially began in Richmond, but moved the factory to a more secure location, Atlanta, in 1862. To A.A. Jones, their facility in Atlanta was impressive enough to discuss in a letter sent home to his wife and daughter. After a tour of the factory he described it as "quite an extensive establishment propelled by steam power and occupies an old 4 story mill house." In the remaining portion of the letter he describes the weather and other aspects of his travel to another iron works facility.
Spiller and Burr closed their doors after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and never completed their orders from their contract with the Confederate government.
Typical folds of the letter along with very slight scattered foxing and toning of the paper.
