American, ca 1865. A log cabin quilt, gifted to a Civil War soldier upon his return, with a detailed, hand-stitched chain of custody to verso; 74 x 62.5 in.
The quilt is purported to have been given to Thomas Young Brannock, a Private in Company I of the 12th Missouri Cavalry. Brannock is listed as being a part of the unit, but as is typical of the Trans-Mississippi Confederate forces, no other information is available about his service. The 12th Missouri, formerly the Jackson County Cavalry, was organized in the summer of 1863, as part of Shelby's brigade. It saw action in Missouri and Arkansas, and lost 35 men while serving with Price's 1864 Missouri expedition.
