Two-part badge, 2.375 in. ln., the top panel identified to "D.A. Ayers," attached to shield-shaped panel engraved, "Co. F / 2nd SC / Heavy. Art. / CSA," with crossed cannon and Army of Virginia battle flag below. Reverse marked "J.S. Ginger / Sole Agent / St. Louis" and "Trebus & Steiner / St. Louis." Ca mid-1860s or after.
Little is known about D.A. Ayers' Civil War service, but HDS notes that he enlisted as a private on an unknown date and served with Co. F of the South Carolina 2nd Light Artillery. Further research indicates that Co. F, also known as the Carolina Artillery, served as heavy artillery, as referenced on the badge offered here.
During the spring of 1862, the 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment was organized at Charleston, SC, and spent the majority of the war in and around the city. Many of the men in Co. F were recruited from the Orangeburg District. In 1865, the 2nd SC Heavy Artillery was converted to infantry and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee at Durham Station, Orange County, NC on April 26, 1865.
