- Lot Description
.72, 36" barrel. Lock marked Virginia / Manufactory forward of the hammer and Richmond in an arc over 1820 to the rear. Altered from full musket length (42" barrel) to musketoon length, possibly prior to the Civil War. Altered from flint to percussion via a brazed bolster process using a crude, faceted bolster. This work was almost certainly performed by Thomas Adams of Richmond during the first half of 1862. Bolster shows the shadow of the filled screw hole typical of Adams' work, and the hammer is typical of his alterations with an uncheckered spur and a somewhat crude profile. Retains both sling swivels. Relic condition overall, but a nice example of a scarce and desirable Confederate alteration of a Virginia Manufactory musket.
Relic, nearly dug condition. Metal heavily oxidized, rusted and pitted. Wood with breaks, chips, and loss, broken and repaired in lock area and with a chuck loose behind the hammer that might fall out. Despite the condition, it is a marvelous example of an Adams altered VA Manufactory musket.Condition
