.45 Colt, 5.5" barrel, S/N 5011 (frame). Blued finish, walnut grips. Mixed numbers as is typical of "artillery" model M1873 revolvers. Barrel #9772 and DFC inspected, backstrap #4039, triggerguard #138326. The most intriguing part of the gun is the frame, which according to the Kopec letter is a likely 7th Cavalry, Custer period frame. This frame of this gun was delivered with the fifth lot of M1873 revolvers, most of which were subsequently issued to the 7th Cavalry. As is typical of these guns that were later refurbished and refinished as part of the "artillery" modification process, the majority of the markings were buffed off, most notably the barrel address, although the original DFC inspection of the barrel remains visible. The two line patent date marking on the frame and the US stamp remain fully legible. The revolver retains a "bull's-eye" style ejector rod, and has a replacement civilian cylinder. This revolver was refurbished by Colt in 1900 for the US military. Grips are refinished replacements and appear to be glued to the frame.
The gun is accompanied by a Colt Factory letter and a letter of authentication from noted Colt authority John Kopec.
