- Lot Description
.34 caliber, 4.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 254 (mfg. ca 1838/39). Blued finish, smooth, walnut grips. Top of octagonal barrel marked in script: - Patent Arms M'g Co, Patterson, NJ Colt's Pt. - The matching serial number 254 appears on the rear face of the cylinder, on the rear face of the barrel web, on the bottom of the walnut grip, on the right side of the trigger and on the barrel wedge. The cylinder turning ring is stamped with the partial serial number "25", without room for the "4". Five-shot cylinder with round stop slots and roll-engraved Centaur scene and COLT mark in an oval with four horse heads. While nominally recorded as being .31 caliber pistols, this gun measures about .326" land to land and .342" groove to groove, with chamber mouths that average around .335", with no two mouths measuring the same. A very crisp, untouched, original and correct example of a scarce and early Colt revolver, of which only about 850 were produced between 1837 and 1840.
Very good to fine. Retains strong traces of original blue on the barrel, with slightly more bright blue on the frame, particularly in protected areas.Cylinder retains nearly all of the roll engraved Centaur scene and is very crisp. All markings remain crisp and clear, mechanically fine, with a good bore that shows light to moderate pitting. Grips are in very nice condition as well, retaining only traces of their varnish, but showing no damage and only light handling marks. Overall a very crisp and correct Patterson No 2 in much better than average condition that any collector would be very proud to own.Condition
