Colt Model 187-72 Open Top Revolver
.44RF caliber, 7.5" barrel, S/N 2798 (mfg. ca 1872). Blued and color case hardened finish, varnished walnut grip. Matching numbers except for cylinder which appears to be numbered " 791 " instead of " 798 ." Arbor and loading gate assembly numbered 1609 . Standard one-line New York barrel address, two-line 1871/1872 patent date frame marking. Straight, non-rebated cylinder with naval battle roll scene. Rear sight integral with rear of barrel, Mason pattern ejector rod. The Model 1871-72 Open Top was the first of the Colt cartridge revolvers made as a cartridge gun, rather than a conversion to cartridge. Only about 7,000 were manufactured ca 1872-1873 and were quickly obscured by the Model 1873 Single Action Army.
Good. Retains no finish, metal cleaned and possibly chemically toned, barrel markings weak. Cylinder scene partially visible, frame markings clear. Metal mostly smooth with some scattered surface oxidation and light pitting. Not mechanically functional, appears to have a broken hand and the mainspring is replaced. Bore about good and moderately pitted. Grip with wear and added varnish.Condition
