The London Gazette. London: Thomas Newcomb in the Savoy, July 13-16, 1685. No. 2051. 2pp, complete, 6.75 x 11.25 in.
Front page news from Virginia, the English king's first royal colony, lamenting the death of Charles II (1630-1685), "whose Piety, Mercy and Justice early removed him from the Cares of an Earthly Monarch, to be Crowned with the Immortal Joys of Heaven," as stated in Crown Governor of Virginia Lord Howard of Effingham's address to the newly crowned King James II on May 13. James II, Duke of York (1633-1701) was Charles' younger brother, and ascended to the Throne of England on February 5, 1685. Lord Howard pledges loyalty to the new king in his address, proclaiming that the colonists "pray that Gods Providence may always watch over and secure your Majesty from all Plots, Conspiracies and Hellish Machinations," later stating, "we beseech God so to preserve your Royal Person, that your Majesties Reign over us may be long, happy and lasting." Three years later, James II would be deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
Very light toning in margins. Few short chips along edges. Otherwise very fine.
