Colonial and Continental Currency, Four Notes, 1770, 1776, 1778
Lot of 4: Eight Dollars, Maryland 1 March 1770, serial no. 8859 in brown ink, signed in black ink R. Couden, J. Clapham [Robert Couden, John Clapham]. Three engraved border cuts, with "Thomas" in upper left scroll and "Sparrow" in lower left scroll (if facing lettering, the first in right, the second is left) for the engraver. Lower margin typeset with "eight 8 d dollars" between diamonds. Maryland arms upper left. The "anti-counterfeiting" marks were a missing bracket on the right of the serial number and an accent instead of a comma after "Dollars." Verso with nature print of compound leaf and branches, with "I.G." on either side of the leaf stem for "Jonas Green," the original printer of this device on the 1 January 1767 issue. The printer of this issue, William Green, used the print unchanged. This example trimmed a bit close, truncating Thomas Sparrow and "
Annapolis" on one side of verso.
Including 2 "United Colonies" issues. First is Two Dollars, 2 Nov. 1776, serial no. (?7)919 in red/brown ink, signed by B. Levy (black ink) and Tho. Donnellan (in red/brown ink) (very faded). Emblem shows grain being threshed with a flail, with "
Tribulatio Ditat" (It is enriched by affliction). Verso with nature print of three leaves (raspberry and two filberts). Printed by Hall and Sellers, Philadelphia on paper with mica flakes and blue threads.
Second is Seven Dollars, 9 May 1776, serial no. 75402 in red ink, signed by J. Parker (black ink) and R. Evans (red ink). Front emblem depicts a storm at sea with "
Serenabit" (It will clear up). Leaf print on verso. Printed by Hall and Sellers on paper with mica flakes and blue threads.
Twenty Dollars, United States, 26 Sept. 1778, serial no. 266274 in red ink, signed R. Cather (in black) and D. Wister (in red) (Robert Cather and Daniel Wister). Recto emblem shows a wind from the cloud creating waves with "
Vi Concitatae" (it assaults with violent force or driven by violence). Verso with nature print of leaf (buttercup). Printed by Hall and Sellers (Philadelphia) on paper with mica flakes and blue threads (although this example, at least, appears to have less mica than earlier issues).
Condition
All have been folded. Two dollar bill with surface soil (even heavier on verso), slight separation of fold. Ink fading on this one. The other three are still clear.
