Lot of 15 CDVs, almost all credited to J.A. Williams, Newport, RI, with 9 including backmark, "From Lobell General Hospital." The collection features the following subjects (photographer noted for CDVs not credited to J.A. Williams):
Dr. Edmund Seyffarth, who served as a contract doctor for nearly the entire time the hospital was open. When this image was taken, Seyffarth was the surgeon in wards 16 and 18. He served under government contract as an acting assistant surgeon from September 12, 1862, until August 17, 1865, being paid the tidy sum of $100 a month for his services. Born in Germany and schooled at a prestigious university in Vienna, Dr. Seyffarth spent four years learning his profession there. After leaving Germany and Austria and serving as a surgeon on a Russian man-of-war, he found his way to America; specifically Rindge, NH, and then Lawrence, MA; Surgeon Lewis A. Edwards, no backmark; Edwin R. Polly (2), one inscribed on mount recto, Co. I, 81st New York Volunteers, subsequently in the 80th Co. 2nd Battalion VRC (Veteran Reserve Corps), 8/11/63; Albert J. Reeve, inscribed on verso. Served as a hospital steward, otherwise Dr. Cornick's clerk at "Hdqtrs." Over time, Reeve would be one of several who served in a similar position; Andrew C. Stone, inscribed on verso, 33rd MA Volunteers & 19th Co., 2nd Battalion VRC, Co. A Infantry; Stephen G. Luther, inscribed on verso, RI Hospital Guard Co. A, Battery F, 1st and 10th RI Light Artillery; James T. Oatley, 2nd RI Volunteers, Co. E; James B. Scott, 125th OH Co. E. Wounded in action Resaca, GA 5/14/64; Griffith H. Griffiths, 24th MA Volunteers & Co. E, 6th Regiment VRC; Caleb Mott, inscribed on verso, 7th RI Vols. Co. I. Wounded in action Fredericksburg, VA 12/13/62. 19th Co., 2nd Battalion VRC 11/20/63; Willis L. Merriman, 3rd NY Cavalry. Wounded in action 6/2/64 on raid with General Kautz's cavalry command at Bermuda Hundred, by F. Kindler, Newport, RI; Nathan Chafee, who put in pure water for Lobell General Hospital, by Manchester Bro's, Providence, RI; views of unidentified corporal and private (2), both credited to J.A. Williams.
