American (Kentucky), mid-19th century. A set of five coin silver fiddle pattern serving spoons, marked Hinton and engraved SWS from LWB, and three coin silver fiddle pattern teaspoons, two marked W.M. Hinton and one marked Hinton, each monogrammed; teaspoon lg. 6 in. (each)., serving spoon lg. 8.75 in. (each), total silver wt. 9.33ozt (290g).
The monogram SWS is for Sallie Woodford Spears (1841-1919), the wife of Captain Edward F. Spears (1840-1907). Edward Spears fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, serving in the Orphan Brigade and eventually rising to the rank of captain. Edward and Sallie were married in 1866, and they had five children. After the war, Edward became a prominent businessman and citizen of Paris, KY.
The spoon marked MMS is for Mary Miller Spears, daughter of Edward and Sallie.
