- Lot Description
Clipper ship sailing card on porcelain coated stock, 4 x 6.5 in. Promotional card for the first class New York-built clipper ship Uncowah, of Merchant's Express Line for San Francisco, under the command of Captain Kirby. New York: Nesbitt & Co., ca 1856. With wood-engraved illustration of American Indian at top left.
The Uncowah was built in 1856 by William H. Webb, and following two journeys from New York to San Francisco (1856 and 1859) and a trip to Shanghai (1865), she was sold to N. Larea, Lima, Peru and employed in the trans-Pacific collie trade in 1865. The Uncowah burned at sea during a voyage from Macao to Callao in 1870.
