Corps badge, 5 x 2 in. Silver name plate engraved "Capt. A.S. Tracy" with blue ribbon suspending silver 6th Corps badge with laurel wreath encircling gold numeral "6." Badge engraved "2nd/ Vt. Vol./ 2nd Brig. 2nd Div."
Amasa Sawyer Tracy enlisted in May, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company K, 2nd Vermont Volunteer Infantry. The regiment saw action early in the war at the First Battle of Manassas. Later that year, it was assigned to what would become known as the "Vermont Brigade", which would suffer more casualties than any brigade in US Army history. In January of 1862, he was promoted to Captain of Company H. During this time the regiment saw action as part of General McClellan's Peninsula campaign. The regiment was present at the Battle of Antietam, assigned to support General French's Division, barely 200 yards from the infamous "Bloody Lane." Not being formally committed, it still suffered light losses from sharpshooter and artillery fire.
Tracy was wounded in the 2nd's involvement in the Second Battle of Fredericksburg in May 1863, where he received a wound to the leg while leading his men. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment endured a forced march of 32 miles and anchored themselves on the far left flank of the Union Army in anticipation of an attack, which never came. He was promoted to Major in April 1864. He swiftly rose to Lieutenant Colonel, as the Colonel of the regiment was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness, with his replacement dying of his wounds from the same battle, only two of the over 1,200 casualties suffered by the "Old Vermont Brigade" during the battle. Tracy would assume command of the regiment in June, 1864. His command participated in several engagements during Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. During the fighting at Cedar Creek in October of that year, he would suffer a second wound from a shell fragment in the thigh.
He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at Cedar Creek, as he was the first to greet General Sheridan on his arrival from Winchester, and it was on his Brigade that the Union Army was reformed. His citation, issued in 1892 reads "Took command of and led the brigade in the assault on the enemy's works." His gallantry would also be recognized during the Battle of Petersburg, which earned him a brevet promotion to Colonel in 1865, with the promotion becoming official some months later. Following the war, he owned a store in Middlebury, Vermont, and served as postmaster for twelve years. After a short time manufacturing carriages, he took up the office of US Customs Agent in Vermont, also serving as Deputy Collector of Customs.
