Printed broadside on linen, 23.5 x 32 in., framed under glass, 26 x 34 in. Salem, MA: Hutchinson's Printing Establishment, n.d., ca mid-1862.
Rare recruitment broadside produced on linen, with headlines, "Look at the Inducements!," followed by a detailed list and total amount paid to soldiers for their service, amounting to "$517...making an average for one year's service, of about ten dollars per week." The broadside continues, "S.C. Oliver, late Lieutenant of the 14th Massachusetts Regiment, having received authority from Hon. Stephen P. Webb, Mayor of Salem, will...recruit the First Salem Company for the War, under the late call for Troops. / This Company will be attached to the 32d Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Col. Parker Now Before Richmond." With a promise to new recruits of $13 per month while in service and guaranteed state aid.
The 32nd Massachusetts was the outgrowth of the First Battalion, MA Infantry, including Companies A, B, C, D, and E, which was organized in November 1861, to garrison Fort Warren, Boston Harbor. In June 1862, the battalion arrived in Northern Virginia, and although it did not have a complete regimental roster of 10 companies at that time, it became known as the 32nd MA. In July, the 32nd was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and was sent to Fortress Monroe to join its new command at the close of the Peninsular Campaign. Eventually forming a full regimental roster, the 32nd participated in 30 battles during the war, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and many others. It was also engaged with loss at Hatcher's Run, Dinwiddie Court House, and Five Forks. The 32nd was among the troops that overtook Lee at Appomattox, and was one of the regiments detailed to accept the arms and colors at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, April 9, 1865. It was mustered out June 28, 1865.
