Lot Description

Lot of 2 sixth plate ambrotypes, including ruby ambrotype of a young, sober-looking soldier seated in a studio setting, displaying what appears to be a rare Jacob Rupertus revolver, his uniform buttons highlighted in gold. Housed in full thermoplastic case; and clear glass ambrotype of a seated, uniformed soldier, his cheeks lightly tinted pink, holding a revolver in his hands, housed in full pressed paper case with period note pinned to velvet lining identifying the subject as Jas. M. Perkins about 1861.

Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.

Condition

Rupertus revolver image, some soiling and spotting on plate, tarnish around perimeter; case with chips along edges, some surface wear. Perkins' ambrotype, image somewhat faint although details are visible. Some spotting on plate. Light cracking in varnish. Full case separated at hinge. Faint penciled inscription behind case difficult to decipher.
