Lot of 2 Civil War Broadsides, the first approx. 12 x 18.5 in. Volunteers Wanted for Col. Gregory's Regiment. Philadelphia, PA: J. H. Jones & Co., Book and Job Printers, n.d., ca early 1860s. Under the title, text reads, "Accepted dy [sic] the War Department!" Broadside also features printed sketch of an eagle atop a Union shield, with arrows under one foot and an olive branch under the other. Under the sketch, text reads, "The Cressman Guards, Company K Of this Regiment is recruiting for the war." Broadside undersigned, "Wm. A. Palmer, Capt." and "Jacob Hersh, 1st Lieut."
Second broadside, approx. 12 x 18 in. Rally for the Union and the Constitution! (Not imprinted, ca 1860s). Broadside features bold text below title that reads, "Wait Not To Be Drafted!" An entreaty in the middle of the broadside invites men to enlist, asserting that "the Brave never die!" and that the men who enlist will "live forever in all men's hearts." A list of state and federal bounties as well as the pay one might receive in advance make up the lower portion of the broadside, undersigned, "William R. Patten, Recruiting Officer."
Not much is known about "Colonel Gregory's Regiment," however there is some evidence to suggest that it might have been the 91st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, which was mustered into service on December 4, 1861 and had an impressive service history in the Civil War, including action at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Appomattox.
Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
