- Lot Description
Printed broadside, 19.5 x 25.25 in. Progress of the Union Armies. What the Rebels Claimed in 1861. What They Hold in 1863. [New York: August, 1863.] With large, 14 x 9.5 in. map of the United States, including the "so-called Confederate States" and its holdings in August 1863. The light gray indicates the regions occupied by the Union including newly admitted West Virginia; the black portion "not yet repossessed by Union forces."
Rare Civil War-era campaign propaganda for the 1863 New York state elections produced in the aftermath of the Draft Riots. In an attempt to alleviate the fears of New Yorkers and demonstrate how successful the Union Army had been in defeating the rebellion, the large map shows that "more than two-thirds of the rich domain of Treason has been recovered."
The tables at bottom outline the population of the Confederate and Border States and Territories, as well as how much land has been recovered by the Union versus what remains in the hands of the rebels. The criticisms of New York Governor Horatio Seymour and a speech he delivered at a Democratic meeting in which he "threatened the administration with rebellion in the North" indicate that this broadside was produced by the Union Party in an effort to get out the vote.
Condition
Light folds, with few slight separations at folds, slight soiling near few fold lines. Overall near excellent condition.
