Folk art carved dark wood pipe, likely laurel root, with very handsome grain. Octagon-shaped bowl. A large inlaid and simple engraved German silver acorn motif is featured on the center flat section of the bowl's front, over the incised (upper and lowercase) carved lettering, "Sherman to the Sea," which is neatly executed directly below the acorn, extending to the underside of the pipe. Six flat sections of the octagonal bowl are also carved in a similar upper/lowercase manner, with names of battles starting on the right side, progressing to the front, and around the left side: “Savannah / Jonesboro / Mession [sic] Ridge / Chickamauga / Chaplin Hills / Bentonville” The eighth flat section which faces the shank is not carved.
The entire length of the right and left sides of the shank bear the same upper/lowercase incised carved lettering, naming both “Peach Tree Creek” and “Kennesaw Mt.” The upper section of the reverse side of the shank bears the name “Rome." An octagonal piece of German silver nicely engraved “Siege of Atlanta” covers the top of the bowl's thick wall. A narrow ring of German silver is also attached to the top of the shank. Accompanied by black stem, likely store bought, which is original to the pipe. Overall width 2.875 in.; bowl height 2.625 in., dia. approx. 1.5 in.
Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
