Nicely carved, folk art wood pipe, likely laurel root. The uniquely shaped bowl includes extremely high relief, scroll-like motifs carved on each side as well as the back. The front of the bowl features the word “Presented” carved in very high relief over a smaller shield motif, also relief carved in smaller letters “To Capt. Moulton.” Overall width approx. 2.5 in.; bowl height 2.5 in., dia. 1.375 in. See also Lot 128, which was almost certainly carved by the same soldier.
Worcester, MA native Orson Moulton enlisted as a 3rd lieutenant and was commissioned into Co. A of the 3rd Massachusetts Rifles, serving with the regiment for three months before mustering out in August 1861, only to be commissioned into Co. H of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry on October 27, 1861 and promoted to captain the same day. While with the 125th MA, Moulton was promoted to lieutenant colonel on November 5, 1862; WIA and taken prisoner at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864, and confined at Macon, GA and Columbia, SC; paroled on December 9, 1864 at Camp Asylum, Columbia, SC and exchanged five days later. By the end of December, Moulton mustered out of the regiment.
