Folk art carved dark wood pipe, likely laurel root. “Roanoke Island” is carved in very high relief, in a wave-like shape that encircles the entire top of the bowl, over the front of a very large shield shape motif that almost covers the full front of the bowl. “To / Colonel / Upton / 25" is carved in relief on the shield, with smaller date of "Feb. 8" on relief panel below, over a very small five point star carving. With wave/branch-like motifs expertly carved on each side of the bowl as well as the shank. Overall width approx. 2.25 in.; bowl height 2.375 in., dia. 1.25 in.
This pipe was presented to Colonel Edwin Upton, a 45-year-old merchant from Fitchburg, MA, that enlisted as a colonel on September 9, 1861 and was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry the following month. Colonel Upton resigned exactly one year later in October 1862. While serving with the 25th MA, Upton saw action at the battle of Roanoke Island, as referenced on the pipe offered here, as well as New Bern.
Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
