Nicely grained, folk art carved wood pipe. Front of bowl features a very high relief carved, small spread-winged American eagle standing atop a high relief shield on which is incised carved in four lines: “H.C.M. / Co. C. / 123 Reg’t. / N.Y.S.V.” A delicate five point star is deeply carved on each side of the bowl, near the top (most likely a Corps insignia). Overall width 3 in.; bowl height 2.5 in., dia. 1.875 in.
The carved initials "H.C.M." on the pipe represent Henry C. Morhous, a resident of Whitehall, NY, who enlisted as a private and mustered into Co. C of the 123rd New York Infantry in August 1862. He was promoted to sergeant the following month. While serving with the 123rd NY, Morhous saw action at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, the Siege of Atlanta, Sherman's March to the Sea, Bentonville, and more, before mustering out on June 8, 1865 at Washington, DC.
Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
