Nicely grained, folk art carved dark wood pipe, likely laurel root. Upper section of bowl's front features a large, relief carved figure of a standing horse; bowl's left side with a quaint, relief carved American shield; right side with American flag flying from a flagpole. The following lettering is carved along the back section of each side and entire back of pipe: “88 Pa Vol / March 19, 1862 / E.E. / Camp Kelly, Md.” Entire bottom section of bowl comprised of neatly carved, tapered fluted designs. Overall width 3.5 in.; bowl height 3.25 in., dia. approx. 1.625 in.
The 88th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Philadelphia, PA and mustered in for a three-year enlistment in September 1861 under the command of Colonel George P. McLean. It fought in close to 20 battles and campaigns, among them Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Appomattox Court House.
