Folk art carved wood pipe, medium to dark brown in color, likely laurel root. Front of bowl fully carved in very high relief with fancy shaped American shield having deep recessed Christian cross (or corps insignia). With “Co. H. 151. NYV” (New York Volunteers) relief carved above the cross. Both the left and right sides relief carved with crude, but very quaint and slightly different American eagles, each clutching a large branch with leaves in its claws. Overall width approx. 3 in.; bowl height 1.75 in., dia. 1.5 in. Accompanied by stem, not original to pipe.
Organized at Lockport, NY, the 151st New York Infantry mustered in for three-years' service on October 22, 1862. Under the command of Colonel William Emerson and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Fay, the 151st NY fought at Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Cedar Creek, Petersburg, and Sayler's Creek, among other battles and campaigns.
