The USS Fort Hindman was launched at Jeffersonville, IN in 1862. She was purchased in March 1863 as the James Thompson. She was renamed Manitou in March and Fort Hindman in November 1863. She was converted to a gunboat by timber bulwarks and thin iron plate – often called “tinclads.” These thinly-armored boats were too light to stop heavy shells, but were able to operate in shallow water and small tributaries. The Fort Hindman joined the Mississippi Squadron in April 1863. In July 1863 she headed an expedition on the Little Red River, a tributary of the Black River and continued to patrol the central Mississippi and its tributaries. She took a number of prizes, including heavier ironclads. She captured ordnance and transported troops and POWs. The Union forces occupied Alexandria in spring of 1863. Admiral David Dixon Porter arrived with his gunboats on May 7. Later that day General Nathaniel Banks arrived with his cavalry. A year later, the Union decided to leave Alexandria. The city was burned even though Banks ordered the soldiers not to do so. Soldiers claimed the initial fire was accidental, then high winds carried the flames throughout the town, quickly becoming uncontrollable.
This photo was supposedly taken when the fleet was trapped by low water at Alexandria by McPherson & Oliver.
