HEMENWAY, Stacy (1836-1914). Document signed ("Stacy Hemenway / Ast. Surg. 9th. Ill Cav") being a pay voucher for Hemenway. 26 March 1865. 16 7/8 x 11 in. (creased at folds, with some separation , spotting, and discoloration to edges and creases). Hemenway writes: "I hereby Certify that I was a mustered out as Asst Sur. 9. Ill. Cavr Decr 18, 64 and mustered in as Surgeon 41. USCT Decr 19, 1864, and have been continuously in the service." Document records that Hemenway received his full pay of $396.31 for his period of service from 1 September to 18 December 1864 from Paymaster Maj. S.V[?]. Holliday. Document also records that Hemenway had one "Colored" servant in his employ named Robert, who stood 4 feet, 7 inches tall, having black eyes and black hair.
Document signed indecipherably, being a muster-out roll for Assistant Surgeon Stacy Hemenway. [Chapin's Farm?], Virginia, 18 December 1864. 30 7/8 x 10 1/4 in. Document records Hemenway's discharge from the 9th Illinois Cavalry for promotion from assistant surgeon of that regiment to surgeon of the 41st USCT following the resignation of Surgeon Henry M. MERRICK, Spencer T. and John FALVEY (d. 1893). Document signed ("Spencer T Merrick / 1st Lieut 9th Ill Cav") and ("J [?] Falvey / 3d US. Cav & / ACM 4 Dis[?] [indecipherable]") being a muster roll for 3 men enlisting in Co. E, 9th Illinois Cavalry Veteran Volunteers. 16 March 1864. 30 3/4 x 10 3/4 in. (creased at folds, with some rips/tears and discoloration at creases and edges, minor spotting throughout). Document records the enlistment of Privates William H. Booth, Martin Bear, and John T. Eabling, each a resident of Chicago, IL.
Stacy Hemenway (1836-1914) graduated from Chicago Medical College in 1861 and signed up to serve the Union in the 9th Illinois Cavalry Regiment as an assistant surgeon before being promoted to surgeon of the 41st USCT. After the war, Hemenway served at various times in the army medical service and the Indian Service, and came to be trusted and beloved by those he served.
