- Lot Description
American, late 19th century. A Cincinnati art-carved frame in walnut with inset mirror, having intaglio carving along two sides, depicting Nile grass, unsigned; 32.5 x 45.5 in.
This frame is a fine example of Cincinnati art-carved furniture. The low relief-intaglio carving resembles Nile grass and reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with exotic cultures as advocated by design reformer Owen Jones. The carving here is similar to a sketch of Nile grass by Benn Pitman, one of the teachers of the carving movement in Cincinnati. It is also similar to a carved panel on a desk in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum. See Jennifer Howe, Cincinnati Art-Carved Furniture and Interiors (2003), p. 229.
