Glacial Kame Culture / Late Archaic Period, 4000-1000 B.C.

4-1/8 inchesThis is one of four examples of the Chunky or Animal type birdstones in the Sorgenfrei Collection. These birdstones usually have a thick body and small head, in proportion to the rest of the body. This is a particularly pleasing example crafted from beautiful green, banded slate. Small, drilled eyes were carefully placed on both sides of the head and further detailed with a small, incised mouth. The edges of the base are sharp and crisp.
Pioneer collector Berwell B. Thomas (1861-1944) acquired this piece around the turn of the 20th century. The Berwell collection focused primarily on artifacts from the northern Ohio counties of Lorain, Sandusky and Erie.Publications:
