American, 18th century. A plain compass by clock and watchmaker Chirstian Hurtin, with bar-type limb, two sight vanes on dovetail mounts, sun-ray engraved star on face with snake-form needle arrestor, signed C. Hurtin, Goshen. A 1788 N. 7; overall lg. 13.25, needle lg. 5.25 in.
Christian Hurtin (ca. 1743-?) was born in either Newark, New Jersey or New York City. Around 1775 he moved to Goshen, New York where he advertised as a clock and watchmaker. There are three recorded examples of compasses by Hurtin, No. 8 dated 1788, No. 17 dated 1794 and No. 39 dated 1811.
