Chinese Export Famille Rose Bowl, For Islamic Market
Chinese Export, first quarter 20th century. A footed famille rose bowl having four reserves, two decorated with polychrome bird motifs, two inscribed with gilt Arabic calligraphy, against a pink and green floral and foliate ground, raised on a five-footed rosewood stand; dia. 6.75 in., ht. 2.75 in. (without stand).
The two Arabic inscriptions celebrate Hasan ibn Ali (625-670 AD) and Husayn ibn Ali (626-680 AD), two sons of Ali, who was the Prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law. Both Hasan and Husayn are revered Shia Imams. The inscriptions are dated 1331 (Islamic year), corresponding in the Gregorian calendar to ca 1912-1913.
Hairline crack on interior. Small scattered enamel losses.
