Chinese Export, 19th century. An oval carved wooden plaque with gilt rope borders, with central gilt and paint-decorated carving of an eagle with American flags and shields, under the banner E Pluribus Unum, the border featuring relief carved scenic cartouches with Chinese figures. Mostly illegible inscription in pencil on verso First presented to ? by Captain Galen C. Blethen, October 11, 1915 ? This was carved in ? China 1872 ?. Verso also features four stamps W. Blethen; ht. 13.25, wd. 16, dp. 1.25 in.
Captain Galen Clapp Blethen (1847-1924) was the son of Captain William Blethen (1818-1905) and Ann McCobb Blethen (1825-1905). He was a master mariner and retired sea captain with the China Merchants Steam Navigation Company.

Painted loss to left frame edge. Minor chips to right side of frame, with some pieces present. Age split in plaque near right side. Minor damage to border carvings.
