American (possibly Kentucky), first quarter 19th century. A sugar chest on frame in cherry with poplar secondary, having a hinged rectangular lid with applied edge molding over a dovetailed case with line inlay and a single dovetailed and cockbeaded drawer with diamond inlay escutcheon, all rising on turned legs; ht. 33.5, wd. 20, dp. 20 in.
This piece is believed to have descended in the family directly from Jacob Spears of Bourbon County, an early distiller and the first to advertise his product as bourbon whiskey.
Center divider may not be original. supported by later applied molding. Lid has been worked on at some point.
