The quilting stitch work reveals additional symbolism of fleur-de-lis, hearts, stars, and floral meanders with fruit. Together these images suggest a veteran's quilt with allegorical details. An interpretation of these elements suggests that this quilt was lovingly (hearts) made for a patriotic serviceman (stars); a participant in the Native American Church (eagle) who served in France (fleur-de-lis) against the Nazis (swastikas) in or with the Air Corps (propellers) and attributed to the 45th Infantry Division.
In Sioux country, quilts are often given to members of the military service when they return home from duty and to veterans on Memorial Day or Veterans Day. These quilts, referred to as "veterans" quilts, are usually red, white, and blue and often contain eagles and stars and stripes. Quilts also have been presented by various tribal groups to individuals who have played prominent roles in furthering American Indian causes. (MacDowell and Dewhurst eds. 1997: 50)
