Charles Johnson Payne, also known by the name Snaffles, was a British artist specializing in watercolors and drawings with military, equestrian, racing, and hunting scenes. Some of his artwork combines these subjects in sometimes humorous ways, particularly when the drawings juxtaposed military life and peacetime sports. During World War I, after serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery as a gunner, he left the service and drew for periodicals such as "Sporting and Dramatic" and "The Graphic," depicting scenes from the front. He was then commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve where he helped develop camouflage for naval ships. During the interwar years, Snaffles covered sports in England, Ireland, and India, even contributing to Punch Magazine. During World War II he helped design camouflage and joined the Home Guard. His success tapered off, though he continued to draw in his private studio, producing books and making Christmas cards for friends. Snaffles is considered one of the greatest sporting and military artists of his time.
