Charles II (1630-1685). King of the Restoration (reign 1660-1685). Contemporary fair copy, 1p, 9 x 14.5 in., Whitehall. June 23, 1682. To the Governor [Simon Bradstreet] and Company of Massachusetts Bay. From the papers of Sir Edmund Andros.
The King informs Bradstreet and the Massachusetts legislature that Robert T. Mason would litigate his claims to lands in New Hampshire before the courts of that colony. He directs the Massachusetts authorities to see that no person who has any interest in the disputed lands should serve on the courts in any of the legal proceedings.
Robert Mason was the grandson of John Mason, English colonizer and New Hampshire's most prominent founder. When Robert traveled from England to the colony in 1681, he immediately considered himself a Lord Proprietor and demanded that colonists living in New Hampshire pay rent. Although the courts ultimately decided in his favor, Robert's claims were often ignored.
Overall very fine. Light edge wear, including some short chips, few tears along perimeter.
