- Lot Description
** Charles Hellis & Sons Double Barrel Shotgun
12 gauge, 30" barrels with ejectors, S/N 1776 . Blued and color case hardened finish, checkered splinter forend with straight-gripped figured walnut stock checkered at the wrist with contrasting grooved wooden buttplate. Length of pull 15.125", drop at heel 2.25". Barrels marked CHARLES HELLIS & SONS 119 EDGEWARE ROAD HYDE PARK LONDON . Receiver and removable sideplates engraved with tight banknote-style foliate scrolls and the the Charles Hellis & Sons name in flowing banners. Tang, barrel release, rear of chambers and triggerguard engraved en-suite. Top of barrel release, top of barrels and forend tip all marked " 1 " in gold, suggesting this was part of a set of guns. Liege made barrels with Belgian proofs, numbered 10047 , with chambers marked as 18.2mm and choke at 18.1mm. Water table marked with both Belgian and Birmingham proofs, also serial numbered 177 6 as is the interior of the forend. Oval German silver escutcheon in toe line with engraved monogram MY . Charles Hellis moved to his Edgeware Road address in 1897, with the sons joining the business ca 1902, later becoming Charles Hellis & Sons LTD ca 1928. The barrel address suggest this shotgun was produced between 1902 and 1928.
Very good as refinished. Barrels retaining most of their later applied blue with markings slightly smeared by polishing. Metal lightly cleaned, leaving the engraving weak on the triggerguard tang. Receiver with some traces of case color. Mechanically functional, very good bores. Wood with light to moderate wear, handling marks, dings and mars.Condition
