.50, 9.625" octagonal hook-breech barrels rifled with twelve narrow grooves. Blued finish, carved ebony stocks with silver wire highlights. Barrels marked N. VIVARIO-PLOMDEUR ARQR DU ROI A LIEGE in gold leaf on the top flat. Engraved breech tangs are numbered "1" and "2" respectively. Locks, breeches, hammers and triggerguards engraved with tight floral sprays. Forends with raised carved intertwining vine motifs, and grips deeply fluted. Grips and stock flats highlighted with inlaid silver wire. Pistols contained in French fitted, mahogany veneered case with a red baize lining and a number of accessories, including: a brass bullet starting hammer, an ebony loading rod/hammer, an adjustable copper flask, an ebony handled turnscrew and cone wrench, a rosewood cleaning rod with a brass jag, a round ebony cap box, a capper and an iron scissor mold.
The firm of N. Vivario-Plomdeur was a partnership between Jacques-Joseph Plomdeur, (and later his son Auguste Plomdeur) of Paris and Nicholas Vivario of Liege. The firm operated ca 1836-1863, succeeded by Vivario-Plomdeur Fils (sons). Auguste was an “arquebusier” (gunmaker) located in Paris ca1845-1870, was the son of Parisian gunmaker Jacques-Joseph Plomdeur. The firm became official gunmakers to the King of Belgium during their period of operation. (Der Neue Stockel Volume 2)
