- Lot Description
Cary, John (British, 1754-1835). A New Map of Part of the United States of North America, Containing the Carolinas and Georgia, also the Floridas and Part of the Bahama Islands. London: 1806. Engraved, hand-colored map, 20.5 x 18 in., not including margins.
A wonderful map with Cary's usual attention to history and detail. He divides East and West Florida, the latter still claimed by Spain, although Jefferson thought it part of the Louisiana Purchase. East Florida with "Ancient Tegesta" from south of Mayaco Lake, and "The Promontory" on the spit leading to the Keys. The Florida Keys, Bahamas, and many small barrier islands along the coast of Georgia and the Carolinas are also noted. Georgia includes what is now Mississippi and Alabama. Many forts, Indian villages and hunting grounds, and more are noted.
Condition
Fold reinforced on verso. Chips missing along edges, but none extend into printed area. Light toning along top edge especially.
