Gregory's Express Pocket Letter Book, 3 x 4.75 in. Used, with 19 of the standard 20 pages in place, and containing personal correspondence from a son to his mother, dated December 14th, 1853. The cover shows a copyright by Joseph W. Gregory, founder of "Gregory's United States and California Express" of San Francisco and Thompson & Hitchcock of New York. Notes that it is "Designed to Facilitate Correspondence between the Cities and Towns and Mining Districts in California, and All Parts of United States." Front and back inside covers list the locations and services of Gregory's Express, which was available to those involved in the mining industry and working in far-flung locales. A fine, Gold Rush-era pocket letter book containing 19pp of personal correspondence between a son "Jefferson" to his mother. In the book, he details a lost love and reflects on his change of heart with regard to marriage and courtship, "The rest of the boys may do as they please, but if they had my notion on the subject, they would give the sex a wide berth." The writer also discusses a severed business partnership and plans for moving to a new camp, then ends with words of affection for friends and family at home. Accompanied by transcription of contents.
Well worn cover. Print on front and back cover of book is faint and in places difficult to read. Small losses top right of front cover and along spine. Interior handwriting is easily legible and pages remain in good condition.
