- Lot Description
Lot of 4, featuring a leather trunk with decorative nail heads, one set with the initials "JAC"; accompanied by 3 portraits of John Addison Clark, including a sixth plate daguerreotype, ninth plate ambrotype, and framed albumen photograph. On the reverse of the frame is an inscription from Clark's great-great nephew, Edward Clark Plumstead, which reads, "John Addison Clark owner of this trunk which went with him to California to the Gold Rush in 1847. They went around Cape Horn by clipper ship. John A. Clark died at Sacramento, California in 1850, and the trunk came home alone." No additional information has been uncovered regarding John Addison Clark or his time in California. One "John A. Clark" from Maine was discovered, who died in Beneeda, California but was buried in Maine.
Condition
Separation of the lid from the trunk, wear of the leather, some dust on the glass of the daguerreotype but it retains its original seals.
Comb with teeth (114) all present and intact. Interior of lid has slight age crack that does not extend to the top. The top has some minor loss to trim inlay, otherwise all else in excellent working condition.
