- Lot Description
Lot of 9 hard images, with 3 showing identified subjects, featuring a quarter plate daguerreotype of John C. Calhoun's son and namesake, Dr. John C. Calhoun, Jr. with his wife, Ann Richardson "Anzie" Adams. Housed in case marked on front cover by George Cook of Charleston, South Carolina.
Dr. John C. Calhoun, Jr. (1823-1855) graduated from South Carolina College and attended medical school in Philadelphia before returning to his family's home at Fort Hill Plantation in Clemson, SC. John Jr. had experienced several bouts with illness, including pneumonia when he was a toddler, and tuberculosis later on in life. He ended up dying only five short years after his father passed, in the decade before the Civil War.
Accompanied by sixth plate daguerreotypes of subjects directly related to Dr. John C. Calhoun's wife Ann, the daughter of Jasper and Placida Adams and sister of Francis Mayrant Adams (1821-1884) whose papers are housed at the University of South Carolina. The daguerreotypes portray Jasper Adams' second wife, Placida Mayrant Adams, and Jasper Adams' brother, Bowen Adams. The subjects included in the portraits offered here were linked through marriage. Moreover, research indicates that Placida Adams was John C. Calhoun's (senior) neighbor in South Carolina. His papers indicate that he actually borrowed money from Placida and attempted to repay it in 1843 when she was a widow. Jasper Adams (1793-1841), husband of Placida Adams, was an accomplished fellow. He was a clergyman, philosopher and, most notably, an educator and college president, serving as president of the College of Charleston during two long intervals separated by a time when he headed Geneva College (now Hobart). His brother, Bowen Adams, served as an army officer and later worked as a businessman.
The collection also includes 2 sixth plate daguerreotypes, one of a woman housed in case credited to H.B. Swift, Market Street [Philadelphia]; 3 sixth plate tintypes, one with paper note identifying a young boy as "J.A.C. Senior as a child"; and ninth plate ambrotype of a bearded gentleman.
The consignor relates that the photos were obtained from a Connecticut collector and were likely originally kept by a member of the Adams family.
