Cabinet card with penciled note on mount verso, "3 of the Indians in Scouts of the Plains, Ned Buntline's Play with Buffalo Bill & Other Scouts 1872-1875," with an additional note referencing a theater in Chicago, the remainder indecipherable.
One of the earliest photographs depicting actual Indian performers from one of the original Wild West productions.
In December 1872, "Buffalo Bill" Cody and "Texas Jack" Omohundro made their stage debut in Ned Buntline's drama, originally titled "Scouts of The Prairie," which featured the well-known frontier scouts as live actors. By late 1873, "Wild Bill" Hickok would join the two showmen as one of the new primary leads in the renamed production "Scouts of the Plains" during the show's second season.
Toning to photograph, some slight chipping along lower left edge to corner, plus lower right corner. Surface soiling, light crease near lower left corner of mount. Spotting on mount verso.
