Butler County, Ohio Pictorial Quilt Top, Signed and Dated 1874, Plus
American (Ohio), ca 1874. A pictorial quilt top with fifty-six pieced and hand-drawn blocks, all arranged around a center block with the text Pictorial. Quilt. / Designed and Made. / By. / Mrs. Ernestine. Hulse / Pisgah. Butler. Co. / Ohio. 1874. The pictorial blocks include drawings of animals both domesticated and exotic, and include now extinct species such as the passenger pigeon. The quilt top has been bound with a green binding (likely later), PLUS a pieced log cabin quilt top with 110 blocks in a mixture of velvet, silk, wool, and cotton fabrics, this log cabin quilt top is unsigned but is believed to have been quilted by the same woman; pictorial quilt 54.25 x 48.25 in., log cabin quilt 80 x 88 in.
On 12/2/2011, Cowan's sold a grouping of 19th century diaries that included some belonging to Mrs. Ernestine Hulse (Lot 237). Mrs. Hulse was born Ernestine Krouskopf in 1817 to a Prussian immigrant physician. In 1839 she married David Hulse of Butler County, Ohio, and they settled on a farm in Pisgah, Ohio. The couple had ten children (eight sons and two daughters). Mrs. Hulse, although not formally trained in medicine, had studied under her father, and had a reputation as an obstetrician and healer of women's diseases. Mrs. Hulse died in 1896, and included with this lot is a memorial card from her funeral. See http://www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/item.aspx?id=100445 for more info.
