Chromolithograph, 26.75 x 37.75 in. (sight), professionally framed to 36 x 47.25 in. Credit in the print at lower right to US Lithograph Co., Russell-Morgan, Cincinnati and New York.
Exquisite Wild West Show poster in stunning color.
Gordon W. Lillie acquired the nickname "Pawnee Bill" while working as a Pawnee translator for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in the mid-1880s, after learning the language at the Pawnee Indian Agency in Indian Territory. He and his sharpshooting wife Mae started their own Wild West Show in 1888, and were one of Cody's main competitors for the next 20 years. As their popularity began to fade in the 20th century, the "Two Bill's" combined to form Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East, which toured for five years until a combination of changing tastes and poor management caused the combination show to be foreclosed on during a performance in Denver in September 1913. Only a few copies of this poster are known, and its size and style suggest it may have been made for the motion picture recorded in 1910 and shown in theatres alongside the popular silent films and newsreels, which adds to its intrigue as motion pictures were a major cause of the Wild West Show's decline in popularity.
Condition
Three horizontal and three vertical folds, with some separation at the lowest fold. Colors very vibrant.
Patina to surface, and few cracks, and wear to silver crown.
