Michael Kaufman (Pennsylvania, 1806-1846). A red and black jacquard woven coverlet with alternating rows of floral and geometric patterns surrounded by a distelfink and rosebush border, signed in the lower corners M K / Springfi / eld: To / Bucks: Co / 1842 / SaraAnna / Kauffman, fringed at all four sides, although fringe on the upper margin has been partially removed; 85 x 95 in. (excluding fringe).
Several coverlets signed by M K have been sold but only attributed to an unidentified weaver. However, newer publications on American coverlets now include Michael Kaufman, a resident of Springfield Township in Bucks County, an active weaver from 1839-1844. In the 2007 Autumn/Winter issue, Art and Antiques Magazine published an article and pictured a coverlet by Michael Kaufman, signed just as this one is with initials. At least one of Kaufman's coverlets is in the collections of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center. Note: Michael Kaufman is not the brother of John Kaufman, a better-known weaver from Bucks County.
