The Continental Journal, and Weekly Advertiser. Boston, MA: John Gill, November 22, 1781. Numb. CCC (300). 4pp, 9.75 x 15 in.
Significant issue reporting on the final and seminal battle that won the Revolutionary War and created the independent United States.
The front page, third column features the news that British General Cornwallis has surrendered his entire army to George Washington at Yorktown, VA, with a reference to the Articles of Capitulation. The issue also includes a description of the celebration that occurred following the news of Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown.
Military matters represent a large portion of additional content. The front page reprints a letter from the Marquis de la Fayette to General George Washington dated Wilton, North-side of James's River, May 18, 1781, which describes American and British army movements. Several interior columns are devoted to detailed descriptions provided by General Washington of returns of prisoners, artillery, arms, ordnance and military stores surrendered by the British Army at Yorktown. Another article of interest describes the arrival in Philadelphia of 24 regimental standards, taken with the German and British forces under Cornwallis, which were then paraded through the city proceeded by the American and French colors.
Toned with minor losses along right edge line. Scotch tape has been used to join vertical fold which had been completely separated along the seam. Scotch tape also on tears on bottom and right edge lines.
