The Pennsylvania Chronicle and Universal Advertiser. Philadelphia: William Goddard, October 12-17, 1768. Vol. 2, No. 38. 8pp, 9.25 x 11.5 in.
Extremely early report on the arrival of British troops in Boston and occupation of the city.
A page two (p. 318) report from the "Journal of transactions in Boston," states that on September 29 the British fleet was "brought to anchor near Castle William, that evening there was throwing of skyrockets, and those passing in boats observed great rejoicings, and that the Yankey doodle song was the capital piece in their band of music." In a meeting between "his Majesty's council" and Royal Governor Francis Bernard at Castle William that occurred on the same day, it is reported that "the treatment received from his Excellency during their tarry at the Castle was very uncourtly, and even rude...So that we now behold Boston surrounded at a time of profound peace with about 14 ships of war, with springs on their cables, and their broad sides to the town...What advantages the court of Versailles may take of the present policy of the British ministry, can be better determined hereafter."
On October 1, "At about one o' clock all the troops landed under cover of canon of the ships of war, and marched into the common, with muskets charged, bayonets fixed, with colors flying, drums beating, with fifes etc. playing, making with the train of artillery upwards of 700 men. This evening the Selectmen were required by the Colonel to quarter the two regiments in this town, which they absolutely refused."
In response to the events that unfolded in Boston, the town of Lebanon [New London County, CT] held a meeting in which they made the decision to, "take this opportunity to express our most hearty union in sentiments with our brethren in Boston in regard to our common rights, as expressed by their acts and resolves passed in their late town meeting." In the published account of the meeting (p. 324), the citizens were most careful to express their "allegiance to our rightful sovereign King George the third" but also resolved to "most dutifully and firmly remonstrate against all acts imposing duties and taxes upon us without our consent which in our opinion, are consistent with the letter and spirit of the British constitution."
News regarding Benjamin Franklin and Richard Jackson is also included. The two were recently appointed Agents to transact the business of the Province in London.
